Now graphic design can
be very conceptual and technical. It's one thing to be able to draw, be
creative and use a computer. It's another to understand design principles,
design theory and produce great design work. After all the previous steps one
through four If you are still interested in pursuing graphic design as a career,
I would encourage you next to seek further education to build on top of your foundation
skills.
So, one of the first
things you can do is: Invest in some well recommended graphic design books.
This is a good chance to learn a lot more about the field of graphic design,
the history of graphic design, principles of graphic design, design theory,
books on typography and general tips, good practice and inspiration.
Next, I would recommend
you seek formal education to get some qualifications. Now this is where it may
vary depending on your circumstances in your life. If you are young and still
in school with years of education ahead of you then I would recommend you plan
your future education perhaps all the way up to further education and choose
the appropriate creative subjects which will give you the chance to create and
exercise your key creative skills and prepare you for your creative career in
the industry.
Now if you're older in
life and looking for a career change it's never too late though this might mean
you having to take a slightly alternative path. If you're starting later chances
are you have life commitments maybe a family or another job. Your aim here is
to focus on building a portfolio of work. I would recommend you repeat step one
through to 4 in your spare time.
Keep learning and
practicing. Set yourself personal briefs to keep you being creative to produce
work. Now at the same time you could consider enrolling in evening classes or
try enrolling in a part time degree course. Here you will get the opportunity
to talk to other designer’s design tutors and get design brief to challenge you
and encourage you to produce work.
So, as well as building
your portfolio you will want to harness your creative software skills. Now
there is a big learning curve learning software tools and it can take a lot of
time. A lot of youngsters will spend their time learning this in school or
college.
